What this part does
The ignition coil acts as a compact, high-voltage transformer that converts the 12-volt current from the vehicle electrical system into the thousands of volts required to bridge the spark plug gap. On modern multi-cylinder engines, these operate as a coil-on-plug setup, meaning each cylinder utilizes a dedicated coil mounted directly into the valve cover above the spark plug. The engine control module triggers each unit at precisely the correct millisecond to ignite the compressed air and fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber.
Because it operates in a high-heat environment directly on the cylinder head, the internal windings and external insulation degrade over time. A failing or completely dead coil results in a non-firing cylinder, causing severe engine misfires, rough idling, noticeable hesitation under acceleration, and a flashing check engine light. Driving with a dead coil dumps unburnt fuel into the exhaust, which can rapidly melt the catalytic converter.

Before you order
On twin-turbo V8 applications, these units operate in extreme heat and are essentially a wear item. If one has failed due to thermal cycling or age, the remaining units are generally near the end of their service life. It is standard practice to replace them as a complete bank or full set to prevent chasing misfires across different cylinders.
Always inspect the spark plug well for oil pooling before installation, as a leaking valve cover gasket will contaminate and destroy the replacement unit. It is highly recommended to replace the corresponding spark plug at the same time. A worn spark plug with an excessively wide gap creates high electrical resistance, forcing the coil to work significantly harder and leading to premature burnout. Ensure the electrical connector seats fully and the locking tab clicks into place to prevent intermittent firing faults caused by engine vibration.
