What this part does
The intercooler is a critical component of the forced induction system on twin-turbo BMW V8 engines. Positioned on the left side (driver side) of the engine bay, this water-to-air heat exchanger uses a dedicated coolant circuit to lower the temperature of compressed air exiting the turbocharger before it reaches the intake manifold. Providing cooler, denser air significantly improves combustion efficiency and prevents detonation. When a water-to-air intercooler fails or leaks internally, it can lead to unexplained coolant loss, misfires, reduced boost pressure, or in extreme cases, severe internal engine damage due to fluid entering the combustion chamber.

Before you order
This unit is specifically for the left (driver) side of the engine; the N63TU engine uses two distinct, non-interchangeable intercoolers. When replacing this component, thoroughly flush the charge-air cooling circuit to remove any debris or contaminated coolant. After installation, the cooling system must be bled using the specific automated electronic water pump bleeding procedure to remove air pockets, which otherwise will cause high intake temperatures and reduced engine power.
