What this part does
The seat belt buckle secures the seat belt latch plate to keep the occupant properly restrained during vehicle operation and in the event of a collision. It mounts directly to the seat frame structure alongside the center console. In modern BMW systems, the buckle contains an internal microswitch that communicates with the supplemental restraint system (SRS) to verify the buckling status of the occupant. When the internal switch fails or the wiring degrades, the vehicle will typically trigger a dashboard airbag warning light, disable specific SRS features, or sound a continuous unbuckled warning chime even when the belt is securely latched.

Before you order
Check the electrical connector plug on your existing unit to confirm the pin layout matches exactly, as different trim levels can utilize different harness configurations. Verify whether you need the driver or passenger side, as the mounting angles and cable lengths are directional and cannot be swapped. If the vehicle it came from or your current vehicle was involved in a collision, be aware that internal pretensioners may deploy during impact; clearing SRS crash codes requires replacing any deployed buckle assembly.
