What this part does

The rear seat belt secures the passenger during sudden deceleration or impact, functioning as a primary component of the vehicle safety system. It houses a spring-loaded retractor mechanism that manages the slack of the webbing, alongside an explosive pretensioner that instantly pulls the belt tight milliseconds before an airbag deployment. When the pretensioner fires during a collision, the internal mechanism locks permanently and the entire assembly must be replaced. In high-mileage vehicles, the retractor spring can gradually weaken, resulting in a belt that hangs loose or fails to spool back into the pillar housing.

Before you order

Verify that 628279400D matches the engineering number printed directly on the sticker of your original retractor body. Seat belts are strictly categorized by their mounting position; a rear left mechanism cannot be installed on the rear right. Pay close attention to the webbing colour and trim level of your interior, as the BMW 7 Series offered multiple bespoke interior options including specific stitching for the M Sport package. If you are replacing this unit due to an accident, remember that the vehicle's Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) module will likely require a professional reset or replacement to clear the stored crash data and extinguish the dashboard warning lights.
