What this part does
The blind spot sensor is a short-range microwave radar module mounted on the chassis behind the rear bumper cover. It calculates the distance and approach speed of vehicles in adjacent lanes, feeding this data directly to the vehicle's driver assistance network. Working in conjunction with the central domain controller, it triggers the visual warning triangles in the side exterior mirrors and activates steering wheel vibrations if the driver initiates an unsafe lane change. When this module fails, suffers water damage, or is knocked out of alignment during a rear-end collision, the vehicle will disable the lane change warning system and display a driver assistance malfunction on the iDrive screen.

Before you order
This module requires initialization and coding using BMW ISTA diagnostic software to pair it with your vehicle's central gateway and calibrate its position. Verify your exact part number before ordering, as BMW utilizes different radar frequencies and module types depending on the specific active driving assistant packages equipped from the factory. Before installation, inspect your factory wiring harness connector for green corrosion, as water intrusion from the rear wheel well is a primary cause of failure for these bumper-mounted components. Ensure the inside of the rear bumper cover is clean and free of heavy body filler or metallic paint, which will block the radar signal and cause false warnings.
