What this part does
The backup camera mounts in the rear trunk lid or tailgate surround, capturing a wide-angle video feed of the area directly behind the vehicle. It transmits this high-resolution signal to the central infotainment unit and parking assistance module to aid in reversing and maneuvering in tight spaces. When this component fails or suffers water ingress, the interior display typically defaults to a black or blue screen, shows a camera malfunction warning message, or displays heavy static when the vehicle is placed in reverse.

Before you order
Modern BMW camera systems are deeply integrated into the vehicle's electronic network. Verify that your original backup camera has the exact part number 07682088401 before purchasing, as different trim levels (such as those with Surround View vs. standard rear view) use incompatible cameras with different pinouts. After installation, this module will likely require initialization and calibration using BMW ISTA or an equivalent advanced diagnostic tool to ensure the parking trajectory lines align correctly and the system recognizes the new hardware. Inspect your trunk lid wiring harness and connector for signs of corrosion or moisture, which is a common cause of original camera failure.
